Slip & Skid Resistance Testing

The Munro Stanley Portable Skid Resistance Tester (also known as the British Pendulum Tester) is a scientific instrument for assessing the slip or skid risk posed by any surface. Calibrated by the BSI to BS 7976 – 3, the pendulum tester is the only slip reading method recognised by and used in a court of law, and is the preferred method recommended by the HSE.

Floor and paving material must comply with slip and skid resistance criteria in both dry and wet conditions.  Chiltern Contracts is able to provide a fully compliant slip and skid testing service; either for in-house tested samples or on-site interior and exterior situations.

‘Slip’ resistance versus ‘Skid’ resistance

• ‘Slip’ resistance is used when referring to a shod pedestrian walking surface. The pendulum testing machine measures the slip resistance of a given surface by way of a rubber slider (96 Slider for smoother surfaces / 55 Slider for coarser surfaces above) that is mounted on the foot of the pendulum. As the pendulum swings across the walking surface, a reading is taken from the dial on the face of the pendulum. Our in-house and on-site slip tests are carried out in accordance with the UK Slip Resistance Group guidelines, and also those of the Health & Safety Executive and relevant British Standards (depending on the type of surface to be tested).

Following the HSE guidelines, results are interpreted as follows:

High slip potential : 0-24 Pendulum Test Value (ptv)

Moderate slip potential : 25-35 ptv

Low slip potential : 36 + ptv

• ‘Skid’ resistance refers to road and pavement surfaces that are driven over by vehicle – specifically the resistance provided to vehicle tyres in both wet and dry conditions (simulated by the Rubber 55 Slider).  Skid resistance is particularly important to understand where pedestrian/vehicle shared surfaces are concerned, or in circumstances where the surface has been polished by the action of vehicle tyres over time. Skid resistance tests are carried out in accordance with the British Standard appropriate for the surface and scenario for its use; e.g:

BS EN 1341 : 2012 Slabs of natural stone for external paving.

BS EN 13036-4 : 2003 Road and airfield surface characteristics.

The Following are suggested minimum values of skid resistance (measured on-site with portable tester):

Difficult sites such as : (i) Roundabouts; (ii) Bends with radius less than 150m on unrestricted roads; (iii) Gradients, 1 in 20 or steeper, of lengths greater than 100m; (iv) Approaches to traffic lights on unrestricted roads : 65 Pendulum Test Value (ptv)

Motorway, trunk and class 1 roads and heavily trafficked roads in urban areas (carrying more than 2000 vehicles per day) : 55 ptv

All other sights : 45 ptv

A number of other factors should be considered when testing surfaces for skid resistance e.g. number and type/axle weight of vehicles, vehicular speed
